My personal philosophy

Concerns were expressed that some of middle school parents did not understand the opportunities available for high school graduates nor how to access support for their children.  (Standard 1)

Middle school personnel met with high school personnel to discuss concerns that some parents did not seem supportive of the educational process because the parents did not understand high school requirements, how to access support for their children at the high school level, nor the opportunites available for high school graduates.

We decided that a Parent Information Night would be held at the middle school.  We would use the room where parents came for parent conferences to help increase the feeling of security.  The middle school advertised the meeting and the teacher called many of the parents personally inviting them to the meeting.  High school personnel told siblings of the the middle school students about the meeting.

High school personnel explained about college and technical school opportunities.  We gave information about how to check grades and assignments on line or how to contact the appropriate counselor.  Parents were given information about how to help their children study for tests.

The parents asked many questions.  We arranged for the middle school teacher to show them the courses the students had chosen for their freshmen year.

Feedback provided by the middle school was positive.  Freshmen students from this group have chosen courses wisely to prepare for high school graduation and post secondary opportunities.
